History of Lefkosa ; Lefkosa ( Nicosia was probably built on the site of the ancient city kingdom of Ledra. Lefkos, son of Ptolemy Soter, rebuilt the city in about 300 BC. His name continous to be used by Cypriots in the local name for Nicosia, Lefkosa. After the destruction of Constantia (Salamis), Nicosia grew to become an important centre of administration. In 1191 Richard the Lionheart sold Cyprus. The city flourished with the establishing of the French royal court. Splendid palaces and churches were built alongside grand houses.
