The First Settlement here is thought to have been circa 275 BC, founded by Ptolemy Philedelphus of Egypt. Arab chroniclers wrote with admiration of the booty taken from Cyprus and expecially from Constantia ( Salamis, which was destroyed in 648 AD by the Emir Muawiya of Syria. The surviving inhabitants settled ni the nearby, small lagoon town of Arsinoe, the present day . The new immigrants renamed the town Ammochostos( hidden in the sand) which was corrupted to Famagusta.
